Some places
in a city where we live are like landmarks. The flavor of the
coffee, the hiss of the percolator, college students studying and
people meeting...these places, all over the world, recreate a
familiar atmosphere. Cafes are also places where people socialize,
because we are isolated from the others in our individual cars. They
allow us to reestablish contact with the inhabitants of the city.
Cafes are welcoming and attract a clientele from each neighborhood.
I like the
shaded terrace of the Emporium Cafe where we patiently wait
for a homemade waffle on Sundays. Awakenings Cafe on Hyde
Park square is besieged regulars who meet with their morning break.
In the village of Glendale, the smell of delicious homemade cakes
perfumes the Bluebird Cafe. The Emporium Cafe,
downtown is busy with a line of sleepy clients on Sunday mornings.
On top of Mount Hope, the Corner Cafe is packed on Tuesdays
with a Jazz band. The bookstore Iris Cafe
downtown on Main street hides a very pleasant backyard. Coffee
Please in Madiera and Joe
in Mount Lookout have roasters if you order your coffee to make at
home. Some of them are exclusively places for college students; Sitwells
on ludlow and Highland
in Corryville. Also, I like the peaceful atmosphere of the Cafe at the
Taft museum
downtown. Across the river, I love the sandwiches at Reality
Tuesday Cafe in Park Hills.
And, I still remember the crepes on Sunday mornings at the Spikle
Bird Cafe in Norwood. Cafes in Cincinnati are my kept in secret places.
